SUNGJANG

Sung is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a fine arts degree and Domus Academy in Milano with a Masters in Design. Sung began his design career in Milano at Samsung Design Milano before taking on a teaching career as a faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Designed Objects program. Since 2013, Sung has served at the University of Illinois at Chicago's School of Design as an Assistant Professor and Chair of the Industrial Design program. Sung has worked with international brands such as Louis Vuitton, Guzzini, and Roche Bobois and has been represented internationally at Venice Biennale, Design Miami, Victoria and Albert Museum, Volume Gallery, Armory Show, Chamber NYC among others.

Through his design and research practice, SungJang, Sung strives to compose works that initiate a discourse around role of design, art, and its capabilities in social, cultural, historic, artistic fronts.  One of Sung’s research interests is in understanding and hypothesizing qualitative perceptual phenomenon such as beauty, elegance, and extravagance through a set of insights and methodology. Currently, sung investigates the point of view of his inherited  Korean culture in response to the industry of production and consumption, process of design, fabrication and labor, and individual experience upon artifacts. 

Sung is a Christian and holds faith in Jesus Christ.
