SUNGJANG
Sung Jang (b.1977) is a Korean-born American designer based in Chicago, operating under the multidisciplinary creative entity Sungjang. His practice engages with various conceptual frameworks that examine the intersection of design and art, informed by a cross-cultural perspective spanning both Eastern and Western contexts. With experience in both academic and professional settings, his work critically investigates the role and function of design in social, cultural, historical, and phenomenological domains.
Jang’s research explores perceptual phenomena, particularly the nature of beauty, which he posits as a function of the interplay between perception of efficiency and expense, or elegance and extravagance. This theoretical inquiry led to a multi-year study utilizing Mobi, a modular building system designed to generate perceived complexly through simple, scalable principles.
His current work examines the influence of Korean cultural heritage on contemporary design practices, particularly in relation to production and consumption, material fabrication, and the conceptualization of point of satisfaction or contentment within design processes.
Jang holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master’s in Design from Domus Academy in Milan. He has collaborated with Roche Bobois, Louis Vuitton, Artemide, Samsung, and LG, and his work has been exhibited at institutions including the Venice Biennale, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Hangeul Museum, and Volume Gallery. He is currently a faculty member in industrial design at the University of Illinois Chicago. Sung is a Christian and holds faith in Jesus Christ.
