Sound Territory @Chicago Architecture Biennale

Sound Territory

This installation explores a way sound can shape the experience of space. A series of sound-generating objects—linked to themes like architecture, machines, nature, and human presence—are placed along a corridor. As visitors walk through, their movement activates shifting layers of sound. These overlapping sounds form a changing soundscape that invites reflection on how we perceive boundaries—not only through walls, but also through what we hear. Inspired by artist Antony Gormley’s idea of spatial reach, the work treats sound as a tool for measuring space. Blending abstract compositions with real-world recordings, the installation offers an immersive experience where sound defines and transforms the environment, showing that space is both physical and emotional, shaped by presence and perception.
